How Massage Benefits Diabetes

Massage will not cause diabetes to go away, but will help with some of the complications of diabetes. Since all of the diabetic patients do have cardiovascular conditions associated with diabetes, massage has been thought help with the circulation complications. Most patients suffer from severe swelling, especially in the lower extremities.  Massage will reduce this swelling as well as help with the complete cardiovascular work of the body. Massage has been shown to decrease anxiety in a variety of patient populations, including people with diabetes. Massage can improve conventional insulin therapy by increasing the bioavailability of insulin in the postprandial state. Massage at an insulin injection site can significantly increase serum insulin action, thereby decreasing blood glucose levels in people with type 1 diabetes. Massage may help normalize blood glucose and symptoms of diabetic neuropathy.

Diabetes Information

Diabetes prevents your body from turning your food into energy. Instead glucose stays in your bloodstream, and left untreated can result in a range of complications.

There are three types of Diabetes

In Type 1 Diabetes, your body is not producing insulin, a hormone needed to convert blood sugar into energy. Normally this hormone is produced by cells in your pancreas, but for some reason this is not happening as it should. As the glucose in your blood can't be converted into energy and absorbed by your cells, it builds up causing high blood sugar. Left untreated, high blood sugar can cause serious long-term health problems. The normal treatment for people with type 1 diabetes is daily injections of insulin which keeps the blood sugar level within normal ranges.

With Type 2 diabetes your body might be producing too little insulin, or it might not be reacting to the insulin correctly. Either way, the end result is that glucose builds up in the bloodstream instead of going into the cells. Left untreated, high blood sugar can cause serious long-term health problems. Type 2 diabetes usually appears later in life, often between the ages of 35-45 years. As it often develops slowly, many people may not recognize the symptoms, and may have diabetes without knowing it.

In Gestational diabetes, a woman’s blood sugar is higher than normal because of the other hormones produced during pregnancy interfere with the insulin that is produced naturally. Gestational diabetes usually becomes apparent during the 24th to 28th weeks of pregnancy, and, in most cases, disappears of its own accord once the baby is born. Women with gestational diabetes usually do NOT have an increased risk of having a baby with birth defects. Generally, sufferers of gestational diabetes have normal blood sugar levels during the critical first stages of the pregnancy.
Whilst there can be complications caused by gestational diabetes, these can usually be managed by careful attention to nutrition and blood sugar levels. Approximately 3 to 5 percent of all pregnant women in the developed world suffer from gestational diabetes.

Symptoms

Diabetes in adults may start slowly. In fact, millions of people don't even know they have it. They may just feel very tired at first, then later may have these symptoms:
Urinating more than usual, as the body tries to get rid of the extra sugar in the blood
Feeling unusually thirsty, because the body needs to replace the lost fluid
Nausea
Blurred vision
Feeling hungry while losing weight
Frequent infections
Skin sores that won't heal

It's important to remember that diabetes symptoms may not be the same for everyone:
The symptoms of type 2 diabetes may come on gradually.
Some people may have no symptoms at all.
Many people have type 2 diabetes and don't know it.
Untreated diabetes can cause serious health problems, such as blindness, heart and blood vessel damage, and permanent nerve damage. Seeing your doctor regularly for checkups and a discussion of your risk for diabetes is key to staying healthy.

Facts About Diabetes in Adults

About 16 million people in the U.S. have type 2 diabetes. Half those people are unaware that they have the condition.

Diabetes contributes to the deaths of more than 190,000 Americans per year.

Diabetes often leads to blindness, heart and blood vessel disease, strokes, kidney failure, amputations, and nerve damage.

Uncontrolled diabetes can complicate pregnancy and put a mother at risk for having a baby with birth defects.

In 1997, diabetes cost the United States $98 billion, including $54 billion in indirect costs (such as disability payments and lost work time) and $44 billion in direct medical costs.

Obesity raises the risk for diabetes by as much as 93%, and an inactive lifestyle can raise it by as much as 25%

How Insulin Works
Food is digested in the stomach and intestines, and carbohydrates are broken down into sugar molecules, or glucose. Glucose is then absorbed into the bloodstream, and blood glucose levels rise. This rise in blood sugar normally signals special cells in the pancreas, called beta cells, to release the right amount of insulin. Insulin allows glucose and other nutrients (such as amino acids from proteins) to enter muscle cells. There, they can be stored for later or burned for energy. When the body has a problem making insulin or the cells do not respond to insulin in the right way, diabetes results.
