Lymphatic Drainage & Massage

The lymphatic system is composed of lymph nodes, vessels, tonsils, thymus, and spleen. Instead of blood the lymphatic vessels are filled with a whitish, watery fluid that contains lymphocytes, proteins, and fatty molecules. The lymph is formed from the fluid around the body cells and diffuses into the lymph vessels. Unlike blood, lymph does not circulate repeatedly through a closed circuit or loop of vessels. Lymph flowing through vessels enter the circulatory system by passing through large ducts, including the thoracic duct. The ducts connect with veins in the upper area of the thoracic cavity. Lymph nodes are all over the body and many are grouped under the arm, breast, and near groin close to the inside leg. The lymphatic systems function moves fluids and molecules from tissue spaces around cells and movement of fat nutrients from the digestive tract back to the blood. It also involves the functioning of the immune system which plays a critical role in the defense mechanism of the body against disease. Basically it helps the circulation by removing excess fluid from cells. It is especially
important for the removal of excess protein molecules. Some of the fluids will carry toxins from the blood as a result of unwanted toxins from foods, air, or even toxins that may penetrate the skin.

Blood and lymphatic circulatory systems rely on your working muscle tissue to help move blood and lymph along. Sometimes sitting for hours day after day such as in a desk job will not circulate these systems properly. Exercise daily is very important to the well being of these systems. In today's times some of us don't have the ability to exercise regularly or at all. Lymphatic drainage massage can encourage
the removal and filtering of waste, toxins and excess fluids from cells as well as
boosting the body's natural immunity. When muscles are
tired, overworked or damaged they cannot pump the lymph fluids as effectively and blood and lymph
circulation are therefore not as efficient. This slows down the removal of waste and
the distribution of food and oxygen and lowers immunity. This
may cause tiredness, swelling and retention. However, in the long term it may cause
permanently weakened immunity, congestion of the skin and cells (acne, pimples,
cellulite) and lymphoedema.
